He calls himself One. A man called the Baptist tells him he is chosen — the one who will unite humanity, prepare the way. One does not feel chosen. He feels like a man who has failed at almost everything and stumbled onto the one thing he cannot abandon.

"I never asked for this. I am not a saint. I am not even a believer in the way you are. Why me?"

What follows is the story of two men in a country that could still go either way — and the ancient question neither of them can answer: the man who comes to prepare the way, is he the prophet? Or the most dangerous kind of true believer?

One
